Aeration helps grass roots grow deeper, reducing the damage Texas droughts cause to your lawn. This is a must if you're wanting to achieve a stronger, more vigorous lawn.
The best time to aerate is when the grass is in early-mid spring or at the end of the season, in early fall. Avoid aeration during the hottest months as this stresses the grass. Aeration is suggested yearly for heavily compacted soils, and bi-yearly for peak maintenance. Spring Aerations are best paired with an Overseed or Fertilizer.
Aeration is the first step to repairing drainage issues for a lawn that never seems to retain the water. Removing plugs allows soil to EXPAND & increases air/water penetration within the soil, creating a better growing medium for your grass.
Dethatching removes the dead brown grass that has accumulated over time, causing the green of the grass blades to solely show it's beautiful color.
Heavy Thatch can create a barrier that prevents water and nutrients from penetrating the soil. This causes water waste from runoff and also what's called "Shallow Root Syndrome", where grass roots aren't able to grow PAST the thatch-line. This makes Texas summers near impossible to get through without without almost daily watering.
Dethatching should only be done around every 3-5 years and will need to be done more often when you have more clay in your soil.
This is the quickest way to achieve a beautiful, thick, green lawn in weeks. We only use a top quality grass farm supplier here in North Texas, cut less than 5 hours before being installed at our customers property.
Our grass is available to purchase for install or just delivery.
The following grass types are available:
• Bermuda (Basic: Tifway 419 / Premium: Celebration) Bermuda grass is one of the most popular of the warm season grasses. Bermuda grass can be easily planted from grass seed, sod or grass plugs.
• Zoysia (Basic: Palisades, Cavalier / Premium: Diamond) Zoysia grass is a tough, aggressive, creeping, warm-season grass. It has a leaf texture that can range from coarse to fine depending upon the variety.
Because it has some outstanding qualities, it is often advertised as a miracle grass. It is tolerant of heat and drought, but it also can take some shade and cool temperatures.
• St. Augustine (Basic: Raleigh / Premium: Palmetto) St. Augustine grass is a widely used lawn grass along the Gulf Coast in the U.S., in Southern Mexico. The species is primarily of tropical origin and is native to sandy beach ridges, fringes of swamps and lagoons, salty and fresh water marshes and limestone shorelines.
Grass SOD Care After Install
First and foremost, try as much as you can to stay off any new sod until after the first mowing. Proper watering is essential for root establishment. The day of installation, enough water should be applied to reach two inches below the soil line. From day two on, keep your sod and soil moist throughout the day. The roots are short so the sod can't withstand large amounts of water at a single time. Other than the first day, the ground under the sod should never be soggy. Usually watering four to six times during the day, for approximately five to six minutes each time, is required until the roots have been established. Root establishment will usually begin within seven to fourteen days depending on the time of year your sod is installed and your environment.
Too much water will rob the roots of oxygen and in warmer weather that possibly can lead to disease. The length of each watering cycle will depend on your soil type and the output of your irrigation system. A clay type soil may need five minutes, four times a day compared to a sandy loam which may need seven minutes, five times a day. You have to judge the minutes given, but here is a tip: If the water is standing under the sod for more than just a few minutes after an irrigation set has finished or if the soil is soggy, you are probably giving the sod too much water at one time.
Avoid, if at all possible, watering into the evening hours (after five-thirty or six pm); this is one of the fastest ways to create a fungus problem. Start reducing the frequency of watering cycles just before the first mowing. This will firm up the soil for a healthy mowing cycle.
The first mowing should be approximately 14 days after the sod has been installed. In the winter you may need to wait longer for the roots to establish prior to mowing.
Never mow off more than 1/3 of the blade during a mowing cycle. This results in less stress for the plant.
Reduce the frequency of times you water at a gradual pace. You can validate the establishment of the roots by pulling up a corner of the sod, and if you feel some resistance, you can eliminate the last irrigation set of the day. However, you need to add a couple of minutes to the other irrigation sets.
Now the roots should be deep and can tolerate a few more minutes of water per cycle. In another week or so you can repeat this process until you are only watering once a day. Deeper, less frequent watering will help roots stretch down deeper and establish quickly into the soil.
Fertilize your new sod approximately four to six weeks after installation to ensure continued establishment of the roots.
